Ambrose Alday, son of Rich and Norma Alday, played baseball at Roadrunner Little League from 1991-1994. He was an All Star, and went on to play baseball at Eldorado High School. Ambrose was known not only for his exceptional baseball skills, but also for his sportsmanship and the manner in which he treated his teammates. He gave his time and efforts to help less talented players improve their skills. Ambrose believed in sportsmanship. His love for the game of baseball influenced many players to try harder and to respect their managers, coaches, umpires, and fellow players. He had a great sense of humor and 1,000 watt smile for everyone. Ambrose passed away on March 28, 1995 after a courageous battle with cancer. His loss is still felt by those who knew and loved him.
The Roadrunner Board wanted to remember Ambrose in a positive way, and
in 1995 established the Ambrose Alday Sportsmanship Award. It is given
each year to one player in the minor, major, and senior softball divisions,
and one player in the minor, major, junior, and senior baseball divisions.
The awards go to players who best exemplify the attributes of sportsmanship,
character, and teamwork that Ambrose possessed. The Ambrose Alday Sportsmanship
Award recipients' pictures are mounted on a plaque in the Roadrunner Board
Room, and the players receive a scholarship for their next season's registration
fee.
